Arthur's Christmas was a difficult to come up with a new spin on something as established as a movie, but the animated "Arthur Christmas" does a good job of it.The film, cowritten and directed by Sarah Smith, imagines that Santa Claus is a position passed along the Claus line like royalty and sets out to explain how the fat old guy is able to deliver toys to kids the world over in a single night. All of that is interesting, of course, but the real draw of "Arthur Christmas" is simpler: It's really funny.

The third film in Paramount Pictures' low-budget fright franchise, which was No. 1 at the box office, had the biggest debut ever for a horror movie, according to Sunday studio estimates. It broke the previous record part two set a year ago with $40.7 million. It's also the biggest opening ever for an October release, topping the $50.35 million Paramount's "Jackass 3D" made last year."Paranormal Activity 3" is actually a prequel, with the discovery of disturbing home-movie footage from 1988. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who made the creepy documentary "Catfish," took over directing duties this time.
The same could be said for "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas," which opens Friday. The third movie in the stoner-buddy franchise takes on the holiday movie genre and aims for new levels of comedic outrageousness. On a Spinal Tap scale, the R-rated humor sometimes reaches an 11 out of 10.The first-time feature director Todd Strauss-Schulson says he kept leaving meetings because he wanted to play in the fake snow. Recalling filming at a house in Bloomfield Township that served as Harold's home, he says, "Every time we yelled cut, Danny Trejo would whip his Christmas sweater off." Neighbors were left to wonder what the imposing, shirtless man with the tattoos was doing.
